Research visit of Professor Edimara Mezzomo Luciano from Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

During June 1st to June 3rd, 2016 the IT Management group at DSV has been the host of the visit of Professor Edimara Mezzomo Luciano from Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), Porto Alegre, Brazil. The purpose of the visit has been to establish a research collaboration between the research group in IT Management at DSV and IT Management and Governance research group at the Business School at PUCRS.

On June 2nd, 2016 we had a seminar at DSV in which Professor Edimara Mezzomo Luciano has done a presentation concerning “Information Systems in Brazil and at PUCRS: current status and perspectives” . The seminar has also included discussions with the members of the research group in IT Management and a presentation of the recent research done in IT Management area at DSV.

The research visit has been a fruitful one and has opened different possibilities for establishing a research cooperation between DSV and Business School at PUCRS.

Open Seminar with Dr. Dragos Vieru

On October 24, 2014 at DSV, Dr. Dragos Vieru from Distance Learning University of Quebec (Télé-Université du Québec), Canada has given an open seminar regarding “Working Under Grey Skies: Information Systems Development and Social Mechanisms in a Post-merger Context”. Speaker:
Dragos Vieru is an Assistant Professor at Distance Learning University of Quebec. He received his Ph.D. in Information Technology at HEC Montréal and a MSc in MIS from John Molson School of Business (Concordia University) in Montreal. His research interests are in the areas of IT-enabled organizational change, knowledge sharing, and IT governance. Dragos Vieru has published papers in International Journal of Information Management (journal ranked ‘A’ in Information and Library Sciences category), the International Journal of Social & Organizational Dynamics in Information Technology and in the Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing. He is chair of the minitrack (Organizational and Social Dynamics in Information Technology mini-track) at the AMCIS and co-chair of the same minitrack at the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS). He has over 15 years of professional experience in IT project management in the health care industry.

Open Seminar with Professor Wim Van Grembergen

At the invitation of IT management group Professor Wim Van Grembergen from University of Antwerp, Belgium has given on February 23, 2012 in Sal C, at DSV an open seminar. The topics of the seminar were regarding Enterprise Governance of IT and COBIT 5.  A short description about our distinguish guest speaker and his presentation is below included.

Speaker:

Wim Van Grembergen (PhD) is a professor and Chair of the Information Systems Management Department at the Economics and Management Faculty of the University of Antwerp (UA) and at the University of Antwerp Management School (UAMS). He teaches information systems at bachelor, master, and executive levels and researches in IT governance, IT strategy, IT performance management, and IT balanced scorecard. Within his IT Alignment and Governance (ITAG) Research Institute (www.uams.be/itag) he also conducts applied research in these domains. Dr. Van Grembergen is a frequent speaker at academic and professional meetings and conferences and serves in a consulting capacity to a number of firms. He has several publications in leading journals and published books on IT governance and IT balanced scorecard. In 2009, he co-authored with Steven De Haes the book Enterprise Governance of IT: Achieving Strategic Alignment and Value (Springer).

Topic:  IT-Business Strategic Alignment Maturity

The beginning of the 21st Century is marked by the continued penetration of Information Technology (IT) into all facets of the organization. Businesses, regardless of their size, cannot function without IT enabling/driving every activity, from traditional systems such as e-mail, accounting, payroll, and inventory management, to strategic applications that interact with customers and partners. In spite of recognizing the above, for over 30 years, aligning IT and business organizations have remained a pervasive and persistent problem. Professor Luftman has created an assessment of the maturity of this important relationship; in fact he has conducted assessments from over one-third of the global 1,000 companies. The purpose of this seminar will be to introduce attendees to the model and present some of the important benchmarking insights that have resulted from Professor Luftman’s research.

Speaker:

Professor Jerry Luftman is a Distinguished Professor at Stevens Institute of Technology New-York, USA, Wesley J. Howe School of Management. He is the founder and Executive Director of the Howe School’s Graduate Information Systems Programs. Professor Jerry Luftman’s career includes strategic positions in management (Information Technology and consulting), management consulting, Information Systems, and education. Dr. Luftman’s experience combines the strengths of practitioner, consultant, and academic. His proficiency in business-IT alignment, books, published research, consulting and teaching/speaking engagements further exemplify Dr. Luftman’s expertise and leadership in his field. After a notable twenty-two year career with IBM, he is currently a Distinguished Professor at Stevens Institute of Technology School of Management.

Unified Service Theory and Perspectives on Services

On 23 February, I gave a presentation on Unified Service Theory and perspectives on services as part of a study circle on service systems. Unified Service Theory views services as a special kind of production process where the customer contributes with her resources. This approach contrasts to earlier attempts to distinguish service through special properties like intangibility and perishability. The seminar also discussed additional perspectives on services based on the idea that the notion of service is best explained by identifying and associating a number of related concepts, including service processes, service resources and service agreements.

Seminar with Göran Goldkuhl on Practice Research

On 18 February, Göran Goldkuhl gave a presentation on practice research. Göran discussed practice research from an ontological as well as epistemological perspective. The discussion was lively ranging from Activity Theory over KPIs to Habermas, with a memorable remark from Göran, “some critique of Habermas acknowledges that life is more than an academic seminar”. Gustaf Juell-Skielse and Erik Perjons also contributed with their experiences of practice research.
