Paper nominated for the “Best Paper” award at the Americas Conference of Information Systems (AMCIS 2011) Detroit, Michigan, USA, 4-7 August, 2011

The paper named “Critical Success Factors Framework for Implementing Effective IT Governance in Public Sector Organizations in a Developing Country”, written by Edephonce Nfuka and Lazar Rusu was nominated among other 10 papers for the “best paper” award at the Americas Conference of Information Systems (AMCIS 2011) held in Detroit, Michigan, USA. The paper was nominated out of 400 papers accepted for presentation and publication in the conference proceedings. Bringing Enterprise Modeling Closer to Model-Driven Development

Enterprise Modeling (EM) provides the means for using models to represent organizational knowledge from different perspectives. When information systems (IS) are involved, Model-Driven Development (MDD) is an approach that focuses on the use of models as primary development artifacts. By observing that EM provides the context for high level requirements, which in turn are the input to MDD, we propose a meta-model that integrates enterprise models and requirements with design models in MDD. The meta-model defines six models that cover both organizational and IS development knowledge. Inter-model relationships ensure an integrated view of the enterprise and the supporting IS by allowing model components to be used across different models. The integrated meta-model is demonstrated through an example case study.

    Modeling Business Strategy: A meta-model of Strategy Maps and Balanced Scorecards

    Business strategy is aimed to support the vision of anenterprise, by paving the way to achieve it through goals thatdirect the strategy’s execution. However, there is a lack of means to establish and assess the alignment of business strategy andgoal oriented requirements engineering. The objective of our ongoing research is to model business strategy in order to establish well-defined and traceable links with system requirements. In this paper, we propose a business strategy metamodelfor Strategy maps and Balanced Scorecards. The validity of the meta-model is tested through a case scenario using OWLand Telos.

    Towards a Goal-Driven Approach for Business Process Improvement Using Process-Oriented Data Warehouse

    An emerging approach for business process analysis is to usebusiness intelligence practices by employing data warehouse and decision making techniques. However, little work has been done on developing coremethods and tools to guide process analysis and improvement. Our researchaddresses this issue by introducing a goal-driven approach for business processimprovement using process warehouse. In this paper, we present our three stepmethod and its evaluation through an empirical study. The results showed thatthe impact of applying our method for process improvement has been perceived positively. (Full paper here)

    Modeling Competition-Driven Business Strategyfor Business IT Alignment

    Business strategy aims at supporting the vision of an enterprise,by paving the way to achieve it through goals that direct thestrategy’s execution. Aligning business strategy to system requirements requires explicit models from both business strategy and requirementsengineering. However, existing business strategy definition approachesare informal and their syntax is based on natural language, therefore,they cannot be used in model-driven alignment. An objective of ourresearch is to define a well-structured business strategy modeling language.In this paper, we propose a business strategy meta-model basedon Porter’s work on competition driven strategy and its extension byStabell and Fjeldstad. Our UML meta-model is formalized in Telos and OWL. An initial validation is performed by instantiating the meta-modelusing a case scenario. (Full paper here)

The Industrial Management & Data Systems journal is published by Emerald, has an acceptance rate of 10-12% and is ranked by Thomson Reuters having the ISI Impact Factor 1.535.

Abstract

The aim of the project Energy Efficiency and Risk Management in Public Buildings (EnRiMa) is to develop a decision-support system to enable operators to control energy flows and ensure energy efficiency in public buildings. The project aims to support building operators in managing a set of conflicting goals such as to minimize costs, improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions, sustain comfort requirements set by the building occupants and in the same time to manage risks and uncertainties.  This presentation will focus on the future challenges related to the ICT impact on Energy Efficiency, such as integration and use of large amounts of data (e.g. sensor, weather, occupant), user friendly adaptation, customization and evolvement of decisions over time, amalgamation of decision making based on mathematical models with business strategy development based for example on conceptual models and balanced scorecards, integration of building energy management systems with other information systems used by the operators, as well as open and service oriented information system architectures for building operations.

Two papers presented at Nodalida 2011

Two papers which I have co-written was presented at the The 18th Nordic Conference of Computational Linguistics, Riga, Latvia, May 11–13, 2011. The conference started out as focusing on NLP for the Nordic languages but now attracts participants from a score of countries. Attending this year were 130 people from mostly Europe.

The first paper, with the title Something Old, Something New – Applying a Pre-trained Parsing Model to Clinical Swedish, is co-written with Aron Henriksson and Sumithra Velupillai.

Abstract: “Information access from clinical text is a research area which has gained a large amount of interest in recent years. Automatic syntactic analysis for the creation of deeper language models is potentially very useful for such methods. However, syntactic parsers that are tailored to accommodate for the distinctive properties of clinical language are rare and costly to build. We present an initial study on the applicability of an existing parser, pre-trained on general Swedish, to clinical text in Swedish. We manually evaluate twelve documents and obtain a 92.4% part-of-speech tagging accuracy and a 76.6% labeled attachment score for the syntactic dependency parsing.”

The second paper, with the title The Impact of Part-of-Speech Filtering on Generation of a Swedish-Japanese Dictionary Using English as Pivot Language, is co-written with Ingemar Hjälmstad and Maria Skeppstedt. The paper is an adaptation of Ingemar’s Master thesis with the same title. Good work!

Abstract: “A common problem when combining two bilingual dictionaries to make a third, using one common language as a pivot language, is the emergence of false translations due to lexical ambiguity between words in the languages involved. This paper examines if the translation accuracy improves when using part-of-speech filtering of translation candidates. To examine this, two different Japanese-Swedish lexicons were created, one with part-of-speech filtering, one without. The results show 33% less translation candidates and a higher quality lexicon when using part-of-speech filtering. It also resulted in a free lexicon of Swedish translations to 40 716 Japanese entries with a 90% precision, and the conclusion that part-of-speech filtering is an easy way of improving the translation quality in this context.”

We (Janis, Jelena, Constantinos and Iyad)  have come back from SIREN (Jonköping 12-13 May) with great impressions. The seminar jointed a number of Swedish universities doing research in the Requirements Engineering discipline (Lund, Blekinge, Jonköping, Linköping, Skövde, Malmö, DSV/Stockholms Universitet, KTH, Chalmers). Also there were industrial participants from Volvo, SAAB, Ericsson and Qtema. Both the given presentations and the discussions were of a high quality and fruitful. Our crew presented two PhD research efforts, one on modelling Business Strategy for aligning with RE (Constantinos), and the other related to an integration of RE with MDD (Iyad). For them we got a very positive feddback, from both the academy and the industrial particpants.
