Maria Skeppstedt and Claudia Ehrentraut went to Aveiro, Portugal to attend the 6th International Symposium on Semantic Mining in Biomedicine (6th-7th October).
SMBM aims to bring together researchers from text and data mining in biomedicine, medical, bio- and chemoinformatics, and researchers from biomedical ontology design and engineering.
At the symposium, 9 long papers, 5 short papers and 3 system papers were presented, ranging from describing SKOS, an editor for representing and sharing thesauri, lexica, vocabularies, taxonomies, and classification schemes to new automated methods for assigning indexing terms to textual documents.
Magnus Ahltorp presented the paper Medical vocabulary mining using distributional semantics on Japanese patient blogs, where Maria is a coauthor. They explore the utilization of distributional semantics models on Japanese patient blogs. Their paper is a result of a collaboration with the Language Media Lab at Hokkaido University.
Claudia presented Detecting Healthcare-Associated Infections in Electronic Health Records – Evaluation of Machine Learning and Preprocessing Techniques, which describes the evaluation of a machine learning approach to detect and monitor healthcare‐associated infections in clinical records. Hercules Dalianis, Maria Kvist and Elda Sparrelid are coauthors of the paper.
In addition, two tutorials on the modern semantic mining frameworks “COEUS” and “@note2”, as well as two keynote speeches from Eric Prud’hommeaux (W3C): Enabling Research, and M. Scott Marshall (MAASTRO Clinic), Bringing semantics into the picture in radiation oncology were given.
