Collaboration with IBM in Global IT Management course and in co-supervision of master theses in different topics of IT Management
The Global IT Management (GITM) course is in my opinion one of the important courses that together with Strategic Management of IT course needs to be part of a master program in information systems/information technology. In 2003 I have designed the Global IT Management course (7.5 ECTS) that has run for the first time in 2004 in the master programs in Internetworking and Engineering and Management of Information Systems at KTH. The GITM course is one that is looking to enhance students’ knowledge in information and communications technologies (ICT) support in globalization and companies that operates in a global business environment. In 2004 I had 72 students enrolled in the Global IT Management course and in the next years the students’ number have continue to increase. Now in 2010 I have 86 students enrolled in GITM course that are coming from different master programs at KTH and Stockholm University plus exchange students.
From the experience of former students in Global IT Management course we have found that for most of them this course was an opportunity and challenge to enhance their knowledge in the IT Management area and develop new skills about how to deal with different cultures by working in multicultural teams. As a result many students have mentioned me that the GITM course have been a usefully experience for them. In GITM course the students are doing team projects using as case studies different global companies. The team project is an important assessment component in this course and in 2008 I have performed a research about the contribution of the team project on students’ learning in GITM course. In case you are interested in the results of this research please read my paper published in Springer Communications in Computer and Information Science, 2010, Volume 111, 28-40, http://www.springerlink.com/content/jq774062hn586554/
During the last 7 years I have continuous improved the GITM course in his content and organization. I have also tried in all these years to bring different guest speakers from IT industry in GITM course in order to share their experience with my students. As a result of the positive impact that this course has had in enhancing students’ knowledge in IT Management a former KTH student Robin Zimmermann (who has worked at IBM Sweden and now he is working at Accenture) has offered me the opportunity to establish a collaboration with IT professionals from IBM. The colaboration with IBM will consists in guest lectures offered in GITM course 2010 and in co-supervision of master theses in different topics of IT Management. Furthermore I hope that the present collaboration with IBM will be extended also for the Strategic Management of IT course given in Spring 2011.
In case you are having an interest in the content of the lectures given by IT professionals from IBM in Global IT Management course 2010 you are welcome for attending them. The dates, hours and topics of the lectures are following below.

Bachelor students present their thesis at SLTC 2010 at Linköping University
Aldin Draghoender and Mattias Kanhov, both students at DSV, presented their bachelor thesis with the title Creating a reusable English – Afrikaans parallel corpora for bilingual dictionary construction, at SLTC 2010 at Linköping University October 29, 30. SLTC is Swedish Language Technology Conference that took part for the third time. Aldin and Mattias presented their work that in form of a poster. They obtained many question from the interested audience both on how they plan to improve their work and about their method on evaluation.

Kick-off for the EnRiMa project!
The EnRiMa project held its kick-off meeting in Brussel, 21-23 October.
The project will perform research and development to improve the energy efficiency of public buildings. The concrete contribution of the project will be to develop a decision-support system (DSS) for operators of energy-efficient buildings and spaces of public use. By providing integrated management of conflicting goals such as cost minimisation, meeting energy efficiency, and emission-reduction requirements as well as risk management, the DSS will enable operators to improve building energy efficiency.
The European research group includes specialists in optimization, decision support and software architecture. SysLab members Janis Stirna and Martin Henkel will work in the project, DSV is also represented by Peter Majlender and Rudolfo Candia.
The project is funded within the European 7th framework program.
14th IEEE EDOC Conference
Next week (26-29) October, I will present a contribution on the EDOC conference: http://edoc2010.inf.ufes.br/
“A Model-Driven Approach for Designing E-Services Using Business Ontological Frameworks”
Abstract—A constant goal of enterprises of all sizes is to align their business with IT. The major concern is to design the technology to support the desired performance goals and business values.
In e-business collaborations, services are becoming the cornerstones for modeling the offerings of the involved parties. However, business concepts, like value offerings, typically cannot be linked to technology levels, such as SOA and Web services. Business value models, formulated in terms of economic values, have been recognized as the basis for eliciting the actors in a business scenario and their relationships. Recently, several business ontological frameworks have been proposed to facilitate the design of business value models. Aiming towards an MDA-aligned approach, in our study we consider business value models for creating a service-centric Computational Independent Model (CIM). By utilizing well-defined mappings, the model is further transformed into a UML-based system model at the Platform Independent Model (PIM) level, capturing both the static and behavioral specifications of elicited e-services.
Sundsvall42
Tomorrow I will present the paper Mot en processorienterad förvaltning (En. Towards a process oriented government*), by Gustaf and me, at Sundsvall 42 conference.
The paper summarizes our work at the OST (Open Social Services) project finances by Vinnova. It discusses the prototype we developed for the emergency phone application process and the full scale solution developed during the project.
The prototype can be downloaded from http://people.dsv.su.se/~petia/phone_demo_v_2.zip
A description of how to install and run the prototype is available here.
A movie from the prototype is available here.
The full scale solution is available at Järfälla’s web-site.(electronic identification is requested.)
Finally, the presentation for tomorrow is available here.
* The paper is written in Swedish. A related paper, presenting some of the results in English, is Business Process Management for Open E-Services in Local Government.
Updated site on business models in health care
The site shows some examples of how business models can be applied in health care. Each business model is described in terms of problems that they solve, existing examples of their use, and a short discussion of drawback and benefits with the model. Drawback and benefits of each model are described by linking to a set of values derived from existing quality frameworks.

The site is developed as a part of the VIPPA project.
The Swedish Research School of Management and IT (MIT) – seminar at Uppsala University
As members of The Swedish Research School of Management and IT (MIT) Edephonce Nfuka and I have participated between 5 to 7th October 2010 to the MIT seminar at Uppsala University. Here we have presented a research paper named “The effect of critical success factors on IT governance performance in the public sector organizations from a developing country: A case of Tanzania”. The paper has well been received and the comments we have got from the participants to this seminar will due to an improvement of our paper that has been targeted to be submitted for publication to a journal. The MIT seminar from this year was also an opportunity to attend different paper presentations and make constructive comments to the authors for the improvement of their papers. Moreover in the MIT seminar from Uppsala University we have attended three interesting lectures done by Professor John Kimberly from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
